9 Trees has built a thriving eco-business through transparency and simplicity

Reading Time 1 minute

Founded in 2019 on the Bristol/Wales border, 9 Trees was born from Michael Cunningham’s drive to combat his own eco-anxiety and take meaningful climate action. The company specialises in carbon offsetting, partnering with businesses to plant trees across the UK, restoring woodland habitats and reducing carbon footprints.

With a clear and accessible offering—allowing businesses to either pay for carbon offsetting or provide land for free tree planting—9 Trees quickly gained traction. As demand grew, so did the team of dedicated staff and volunteers. However, the flat and informal structure that had worked well in the early days needed to evolve to sustain long-term growth.

Michael enrolled in the Help to Grow: Management Course to gain the skills needed to refine his business strategy. The course provided him with practical tools to strengthen his team’s structure, boost engagement, and create a clear roadmap for sustainable expansion. With guidance from his mentor, he recognised the need for a dedicated business development manager, someone who could focus on building partnerships while he concentrated on daily operations and tree planting.

This decision proved instrumental in 9 Trees’ continued success. The new business development manager helped secure valuable partnerships, driving the company forward. As a result, 9 Trees won the Micro Business of the Year Award, an achievement that not only recognised their impact but also became a powerful marketing tool as they continue to grow and make a difference.
